Breaking News from the leader in LSU Football coverage:
Denton Guyer's versatile top 10 overall DB Ryan Yaites commits to DBU, shocking some analysts who expected him to land at Michigan State or stay in Texas, while providing Kerry Cooks' safety class with a second highly touted commitment in as many days.
When Yaites cut Michigan State from his final four only a day ago, telling me "a lot has changed over the past 48 hours...people will be surprised", I knew LSU were in pole position.
No question Brian Kelly's staff are heavily focused on rebuilding LSU's defensive back depth via the portal or on the recruiting trail, and it turns out 2023 is a class filled to the brim with DB talent.
Securing Ryan Yaites' commitment isn't a bad way to start:
Once Brian Kelly and Kerry Cooks arrived from Notre Dame, Yaites' previously nonexistent LSU recruitment exploded; Despite recruiting service analysts questioning Kelly and co's chances, the renegade Denton Guyer playmaker wanted to be a Tiger.
Greatly impressed by his visit a week or so ago, locked in with his future coaches (led by "Coach Kelly & Coach Cooks", according to Ryan), and fired up about the idea of wearing purple & gold, Yaites made it official this morning by announcing his commitment as part of LSU's 2023 class.
Talking about LSU, Yaites said: “It’s a great program. It’s DBU. Kerry Cooks, Brian Kelly, I’ve been talking to them since they were at Notre Dame. They’ve said from the beginning that they were going to do whatever they needed to do to get me.”
Recording 42 tackles, 8 pass break-ups and an interception as a junior, Ryan always stood out to Kerry Cooks and Brian Kelly, and their years-long pursuit finally came to fruition today.
Welcome to DBU, Ryan!
