Over 2 heavily contrasting seasons at LSU (making the 2024 Freshman All-SEC squad & 2025 Maxwell watch list), junior Caden Durham devolved from superstar freshman into sophomore slump within one of LSU's worst ever offenses, running behind possibly the worst Tiger O-line, while he simultaneously dealt with injuries, his own languishing performances & the rise of Harlem Berry.

But Durham's production (mostly from Year 1) still eclipses everyone else in the room: 1,258 total rushing yards (753 as a freshman), 9 rushing scores (7 in Year 1), 44 catches, 351 receiving yards, and 2 receiving scores....including multiple touchdowns of 89+ yards that gave spark and early life to LSU's broken offense under Joe Sloan.

      All things appeared like Durham was a superstar in the making for LSU in 2024 and the first few weeks of 2025, performing at a high octane echelon against upper crust competition;

This was a young man who clocked over 1,000 total yards in 2024, starting the year as a freshman substitute before turning into a game-changing Tiger of considerable stardom (breaking out during a gritty road win @ South Carolina), even attracting national attention, widespread SEC headlines and heavy local notoriety entering his sophomore campaign.

From fall 2024 to October 2025, Durham had Tiger fans believing he was the answer to their longtime running back woes in the post 2019 era....

However, that favor and fervor his way began to dissipate as the former track thoroughbred battled ankle problems throughout both seasons, with freshman Harlem Berry repeating what Durham did the year before when he usurped him for the starting spot.

It was no wonder why Caden Durham was dipping his toes into the transfer portal only months ago, but Durham's surprising return to the team, knowing he faced stiffer competition, was a bright sign for LSU's depth at running back.

During a moment where Kiffin & his staff could do no wrong, retaining all the right players, signing all the right portal talents, and making all the right priorities, retaining Durham's star potential was critical.

Regardless of the fan & media criticism aimed his way throughout 2025, many asking if he was "too injury prone?", if he was incapable of hitting holes with the kind of speed & violence of his freshman season, and even allegations that he had a lack of vision behind the line of scrimmage, Lane Kiffin & Kevin Smith made damn sure to retain Durham, understanding the infinite home run-hitting possibilities for the Tiger junior within the Kiffin/Weis/Smith rushing game setup.

Despite all the good vibes heading into 2026, Durham rarely excited or exploded for much of Spring Camp, mostly holding serve for small chunks and a random busted gain, until later, he turned it on for a string of practices, showing a renewed commitment amid intense adversity & competition from other backs....

Once again, Durham is undoubtedly a player with a mountain of kinetic potential...but will his past production make him an automatic pick for RB1???
Not in the Kiffin era....reputation alone will not earn snaps from this staff.

Durham will have to find his old form and produce, especially now with Dilin Jones impressing mightily, appearing to be the consensus frontrunner for the RB1 spot after Spring, leaving Caden, Berry, Stacy Gage, Rod Gainey Jr, and Raycine Guillory to theoretically battle it out for the 2nd spot.

Right now, the task could feel daunting, but Durham must remember one thing: starters aren't picked in Spring....Fall Camp will stand as the climactic, decisive stage.

Now, in the summer, it's time to get to work, upgrade, level up, and prove every single doubter wrong.

If things go his way, including consistent health, separating himself from the pack, plus a defiant on-field answer to questions about his reading of the game, Caden Durham possesses the agile abilities, scheme versatility & most of all, the unstoppable speed to absolutely go toe to toe vs Ole Miss' Kewan Lacy for the SEC Running Back Crown.

Everyone knows what kind of player he's been, and everyone can envision what kind of player he can become, but it's time for #29 to take the reins with both hands and write that story his way.
