He was set for LSU superstardom in 2026....and yet, it almost wasn't to be:

Playing as a backup safety over his first two seasons in purple and gold (460 snaps combined), junior Tiger DB Dashawn Spears was playing at an elite level, and yet was stuck on the sidelines for half of the season. With the clock ticking down on his college eligibility, it wasn't enough, and Spears entered the transfer portal amid the post-Kelly firing chaos & uncertainty.

However, new Head Coach Lane Kiffin, only days on the job, pursued the elite defensive back and convinced Spears to change his decision only hours after news first broke of his supposed departure.

That 11th hour conversation to keep Spears on roster continues to grow with more importance and value by the day, as the Louisiana-born DB will now feature at the star position within Blake Baker's defense, allowing the 3.0 Bayou Bandits to play hybrid schemes utilizing Spears' athleticism, length, size, and speed as its focal point.

Graded as LSU's 2nd overall defender in 2025, according to Pro Football Focus, Spears rarely put a foot wrong, hitting a 90.1 overall defensive grade and 90.3 coverage ranking (only trailing 6th overall pick Mansoor Delane in both categories), while making plays in the backfield, stuffing the run, stopping any action over the middle, and preventing large passing gains downfield.

His 2025 sophomore year was stellar, cobbling together 29 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, 3 QB pressures, 1 sack, 2 INTs vs Florida, including one returned to the house, and 2 PBUs, while allowing 10 catches from 17 targets for 75 yards, and 0 TD catches, before also forcing 2 forced incompletions via tight coverage....

The Denham Springs hometown hero also possesses elite stopping power vs ball carriers in space or between the tackles, sports incredible length alongside abundant playmaking capabilities in coverage.

Due to his increased weight, strength, and experience, Spears at star is a masterstroke move....not only making sure a great player isn't wasted on the bench for even a snap (considering LSU yet again deploy two powerhouse safeties in Ty Benefield & Tamarcus Cooley), defensive coordinator Blake Baker, safeties coach Jake Olsen and DBU Miyagi Corey Raymond found the best spot for the balance of both player & team....star.

As we witnessed throughout Spring camp, he not only continued right where he left off in 2025, the Louisiana native son definitely progressed;
