After the first 5 madcap days of the wildest transfer portal cycle yet, Lane Kiffin's LSU Tigers are now over the 10 man signing mark, including an early focus on receiver, running back, and of course, quarterback.

TRE WILSON JOINS

After Tuesday night's wild events regarding the quarterback position, Wednesday started with news of LSU signing former Florida Gators WR Tre Wilson III, who cobbled together 1,043 yards, 10 TD catches and 107 total grabs over 3 seasons in Gainesville, a player who could be a difference maker for the Tigers' rebuilt WRU room under new WR Coach / Passing Game Coordinator George McDonald.

BENEFIELD SHOWS PROMISE

While on the defensive side of the ball, former Boise State safety Ty Benefield's 107 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, 4 PBUs, 2 INTs, 1 FR and 1 FF from last season is stellar production anywhere, in any conference.

Last season, Baker and safeties coach Jake Olsen (with an assist from analyst Lance Guidry) was able to maximize the best from AJ Haulcy, a savage wrecking ball out of Houston who was able to become one of LSU's best overall Tigers last fall.....could they do the same, once again, with Benefield???

Elsewhere, Stephiyian Green is a solid pickup on the defensive front (2.5 sacks across 6 starts last year for Clemson, including a 6 tackle performance vs LSU), and the Tigers also hosted former Tennessee edge rusher Jordan Ross on Wednesday, but LSU is still looking for more presence, namely in the highly prized Chaz Coleman, Penn State's former offensive front obliterator and soul taker.

CHAZ COLEMAN LATEST

Coleman enjoyed his time at Baton Rouge, as did some members of his family, another major key in signing the mastermind defensive end, but work remains to be done as Coleman just wrapped up a visit to Columbus and Ohio State, with more to follow.

Still, I am told by a friend close to the situation, Coleman has an attachment with LSU that isn't yet present with other schools....although, after more visits, that could change. Which is why defensive staff members at LSU are asking Coleman for another visit, showcasing Blake Baker's desire to sign the former Littany Lion.

Appearing in just 9 games last year, the incoming sophomore edge rusher compiled 8 tackles, 3 TFLs, 1 sack, 1 batted pass, 2 fumble recoveries (1 returned 48 yards for a near touchdown), 1 forced fumble, 15 QB pressures, Coleman is still raw, but capable of becoming an All-SEC, All-American level defensive force wearing purple and gold.

A TALE OF TWO QBs

As for the Ballad of Sam Leavitt, it's looking more and more like the former Arizona State signal caller won't be a Tiger, as he left Baton Rouge after multiple days without a commitment, without a real buzz about the environment he found himself in, while questions were raised about his current injury and his absence from Spring practices, as well as some differences of view on financial terms.

Perhaps Leavitt will give LSU another shot, however, following the highly publicized moment at the PMAC, where Sam Leavitt sat next to Lane Kiffin, Tre Wilson and Whit Weeks, glazing blanky into his phone, Coach Kiffin appeared to receive a phone call...a shadow on his eyes under the baseball cap as he leaned away from Leavitt to listen intently to the caller.

In just a matter of moments, news spread like wildfire of who that caller could be and where he may be headed next: Washington Huskies 2024 & 2025 starting quarterback De'mond Williams said "no mas" to a 4 day old, $4 million contract he'd already signed, and said he was entering his name into the portal...with a no contact tag attached.

Then, according to our contacts, Williams, who is familiar with Coach Kiffin, the man who earned his commitment at Ole Miss a few years prior, reached out to Kiffin via representatives, and the Head Coach mobilized Charlie Weis Jr, Joe Cox, and the rest of his staff to audible from Leavitt, who looked disinterested, and brace for a full on pursuit for De'mond Williams, now the #1 priority for Kiffin's 2026 LSU project.

Williams would come at a price of $5-6 million, I am told by a person who writes these kinds of checks, numbers also echoed in other reports in ballpark figures.
