During this past Saturday's scrimmage, LSU's offense rebounded with almost 800 yards of total offense, 8 offensive touchdowns and no reported turnovers, racking up a performance of 20/27 300+ yards, 4 TDs, 0 INTs, and rushing for 1 TD from QB Husan Longstreet, explosive playmaking from WR Winnie Watkins (160 yards and 10 catches), a steady rotation of progressive rushing from Kevin Smith's lengthy list of backs, while QB Landen Clark rushed for 2 TDs before tossing another score.
Showcasing a strong comeback performance from their lukewarm display the week prior (scoring 8 TDs on 16 drives), this was what coaches, fans and of course the players themselves all wanted to see: a statement of growth against a very good Blake Baker defense that will test and sharpen Kiffin, Weis and Joe Cox's offensive axis.
Transfer RB Stacy Gage rushed for nearly 60 yards from just a few carries, continuing his push higher up the depth chart, while WR Jackson Harris caught a clutch 50 yard grab and go TD above linebacker TJ Dottery (thrown by Clark), and young wide out Phillip Wright III repeated his impressive exploits once again with a toe tapping sideline catch...also showcasing a growing ability to make defenders miss after the catch.
There is a deep reservoir of skill position weapons of varying profiles, size, strength, speed, length, versatility.....LSU possess the offensive depth and heft to punish any defense....however, practicing daily against their own may just help them reach the next level.
This is a great sign, as LSU's offense punched back hard, throttling Blake Baker's strong defense in the manner many were hoping to see, racing out the explosive, all systems geaux, pedal to the metal, hell bent for leather Lane Kiffin offense in all its glory...replete with weapons all over the roster, and yet still, LSU were operated by backup quarterbacks in lieu of Sam Leavitt and it didn't matter: both Longstreet and Clark went off, even as rushers (3 combined rushing TDs).
The defense will no doubt answer during the next practices ahead, but still, Saturday supplied a tantalizing preview of what is possible in 2026....an intense, speedy, at times methodical multidimensional offensive attack.
