LSU All-American DT Mekhi Wingo was selected in the 6th round by the Detroit Lions at the 189th overall spot of the 2024 NFL Draft, chosen by the hosts of this weekend's proceedings. The Lions were last year's Cinderella squad & rising NFC North contenders under charismatic Head Coach Dan Campbell....they've built well both in free agency and the Draft, and becoming the team to finally pick Wingo earns my respect alone.

For even his most cynical detractors, Wingo's drop down the NFL Draft order was simply shocking.

14 other defensive tackles were taken ahead of Wingo, a bizarre occurrence considering his versatility, skillset, proven results, individual honors on and off the field, next level maturity....but apparently the same old foolish noose around the throats of many a fired GM or scout reared its ugly head once again: the obsession with measurables.

Viewed as undersized by some pompous GMs, the critical moment arrived during the 2nd round where 7 defensive tackles were selected.

Pre Draft, if you'd told the entire LSU fanbase that scenario, 7 DTs picked in the 2nd round, I reckon 90% of those fans agree that Wingo would definitely have made it among those seven interior defensive linemen.

Somehow, most likely due to other priorities on the roster position-wise or due to his measurables, Wingo's deserved high round selection didn't happen...

Now, narratives have conveniently changed for some online leeches who love to move goal posts or pretend their omnipotence isn't just pure impotence....but regardless of where or when he was selected, you'd have to feel the former Tiger #18 is going to have a strong opportunity for longevity and greatness at the NFL level....he's proven that to Tiger fans on and off the field, he's displayed that at an All-American level against top competition.

The whole charade from the other 31 GMs was a bout of uncontrollable disrespect...and Mekhi Wingo will be spending the rest of his career enjoying his revenge.

He thankfully has his foot in the door. I am hoping he surprises the heck out of everybody and becomes a fine player for a number of years.
