An exciting, experienced addition that solidifies Blake Baker and Corey Raymond's younger secondary, former Boise State safety Ty Benefield is a major standout signing for Lane Kiffin's 2026 Portal Class, LSU needing to fill the vacant shoes of outgoing senior AJ Haulcy.
Racking up 235 tackles, 18 tackles for loss, 12 PBUs, 3 fumble recoveries, 2 forced fumbles, 3 sacks & 5 INTs across his trio of seasons in Idaho, Benefield is a playmaking, ball-hunting, backfield-stuffing sultan of pain....a player many fans and media members (in the know) are excited to watch in purple and gold.

All that said, his 41 games of experience is the most critical attribute Benefield brings to the table, showcasing what he can do at an elite level for Boise State over 3 very good seasons (even recording 3 sacks, 5 PBUs, an INT, 46 tackles and 4.5 TFLs as a freshman back in 2023).
In totality, Benefield reminds me a lot, circumstance-wise, of AJ Haulcy:
Smaller school, arriving at his senior year, ready to take the next step (via the portal) to test himself in the SEC, both future professional aspirations and developmental ambitions playing into his decision....a staggering, voluminous resume, a statistical outpouring of football violence and playmaking theater in equal doses.

So, taking his place now among a secondary poised for big things, DJ Pickett and PJ Woodland at corner, and a safety / star stronghold of returning veteran starter Tamarcus Cooley, Feheem Delane, and fan favorite Dashawn Spears (among others), Ty Benefield will enter Spring camp as LSU's most experienced safety (Cooley is second with 30 games) and elder statesman....much like Haulcy this past season.
Some Tiger fans have asked me, "will Benefield be as good as Haulcy?", and I've said this on my live shows as well as writing it here for you now: in theory, he doesn't have to be.
All of Corey Raymond and Jake Olsen's secondary are a year better, more seasoned, tested, experienced, and even while raw in 2025, all accepted the veteran leadership from Haulcy and Cooley.

In 2026, Benefield should find a secondary room that, while young, is full of elite talents who faced down even tougher on field tasks than he did at the Mountain West level, guarding the cream of the SEC crop and forced to quickly adjust to the speed of the conference.
That will be the key....
....Speed....
Benefield usually showcased expert tackling in space at Boise, preventing big gains and stuffing plays equally, however, it will be tough to gauge just how ready he is for the speed of the SEC's athletes until we witness him in action, getting tested over and over again throughout Spring and Fall Camp.
No doubt he is up for the challenge, surely ready to make his last dance a supersonic joyride to the very apex of the college football world.
LSUOdyssey is here for it!
