Entering Year 2, there is plenty of offseason talk concerning sophomore LSU safety Dashawn Spears, a Tiger who flashed during limited snaps over his freshman season, but, following his continued elevation throughout 2025 Spring camps, we all learned the truth about him rather quickly: Spears possesses all the tools needed to become an elite safety.

2 main attributes stick out for me:
Spears' 6'3 length (who could forget his stretching, towering red zone interception during the 2024 Spring game) & his buoyant athleticism suit him beautifully for the modern game, with opposition QBs unlikely to feel confident throwing over the top, while his movements and reading of the game continues to develop rapidly, showcasing stronger tackling angles and renewed physicality throughout Spring.
Despite significant competition for snaps at the safety position, due to the arrival of top ranked transfers AJ Haulcy and Tamarcus Cooley, while battling for snaps with senior Jardin Gilbert or junior Javien Toviano, there is plenty of coaching staff & media room admiration for Spears as a prospect.....but one wonders.....
Last season, taking on Major Burns, Sage Ryan, Jordan Allen, and Gilbert for reps was easier for Spears to overcome, finding himself starting 4 games & appearing on the field for 205 plays, including 2 snaps at the very end of the USC game in Week 1.

Needing to make a stop inside the red zone, the true freshman Spears was thrown into the game for just a pair of snaps, and, whiffed on a 1 v 1 tackling attempt that allowed USC's game winning score....
It was a high profile moment of adversity Spears would have to face head on, even as scores of fans and media analysts blasted Safeties Coach Jake Olsen's decision to throw such an inexperienced player into that game at that moment with barely a second to get settled into the flow of action, let alone make a play before.....suddenly, the ball went straight down his alley, making his reactions / tackling attempt look like a deer caught in the headlights....
Spears recovered nicely from that moment, playing more than 27 snaps in 5 different games, but was held out as a mere spectator during the meat of the schedule, as expected for a true freshman.

Cobbling together 24 tackles & 1 PBU throughout 13 different games, Dashawn Spears is one Tiger to keep a trained eye on this Fall Camp.
Will Spears be able to overcome LSU's transfer tandem of Haulcy and Cooley, as well as the more experienced Gilbert or Toviano in order to iron out his own starting slot, or at least a significant contributing role from the sidelines???
In the end, whether Spears rises above all others or is forced to wait another year for ultimate, every snap glory, the strength of LSU's safety room should improve as an overall unit from their shared competitive drive.
Also, unless his mentality & hunger wain, Spears will see his game take that next step thanks to the enhanced attrition.

He is exactly the type of defensive back that should excel here. I’m all for these quality transfers, but it is high time this young talent gets developed by our safety coach. If we don’t have a solid blanket back there, I’m looking at the coaching.
