Inspired by WRU teammates Malik Nabers & Brian Thomas Jr's epic 2023 season & rise to the top of this past April's NFL Draft, senior LSU receiver Kyren Lacy made this off-season & Spring camp his own personal playground, assuming total air traffic control, subsequently taking over practices at will.
Becoming Heisman-winning QB Jayden Daniels' #3 option last fall, reeling in a respectable 7 TDs from 30 catches (44 targets) resulting in 557 yards, Lacy is matching his never-ending confidence with grinding dedication to his craft, and it's starting to stack up as an ever-rising tower of exceptional works.
Lacy is skying above, separating beyond, and driving past Tiger defenders of all ilk or stripe.....pulling off the outrageous all over the field....evolving into an elite overall receiving weapon this off-season.
We've always known Lacy holds the attributes to become a 1st or 2nd Round pick in the NFL Draft, we've always understood he could be that #1 guy at LSU if given the opportunity, platform and if he invested himself more than ever before:
For Tiger coaches, teammates or fans looking for a sign of growth, an indication of greatness starting to fall into place, one would find it in the way he attacked Spring.
Once again, answering the accomplishments of his WRU peers that came before him and striding forward to take their mantle, Kyren has proven he is yet another top tier, Louisiana-made WRU juggernaut.
With just over 90 days left until the season kicks off, is there anything that could hinder Lacy's rise?
The drops have to stop:
Considering the way the Thibodaux-born Tiger owns an unfortunate history of dropping critical 3rd down passes during big moments (5 of his 7 overall Tiger drops), Lacy simply must improve his catch rate or he could find himself relegated down the depth chart, regardless of his fantastic skillset.
Throughout his 2 seasons at LSU, we've seen Lacy consistently impress in spring, each of the 2 spring games, and even fall camp he reaches high standards....yet due to the appearance of Malik, Brian, tight end Mason Taylor, as well as former 5 star high school prospect & SEC record holder Kayshon Boutte ahead of him on roster, Lacy never really had that full opportunity to showcase his blistering receiving skills.
Look at the Auburn game last fall for the utmost example of his prowess & proven pedigree:
After dropping a 3rd down pass, Kyren rebounded to deliver a career high 111 yards, 4 catches and a 25 yard touchdown catch that put the game to bed.
If Lacy fulfills his ultimate potential, incessantly replicates the same form he's showcased during every practice, and delivers upon his own promise throughout 2024, there is no limit to the possibilities for #2....
There may be a few If's regarding Lacy, however, much like the eternal patience & iron will exhibited by his QB Garrett Nussmeier over the past few years, I fully expect to witness the former ULL wideout grab his once in a lifetime opportunity to be "the guy" at WRU with both hands; considering his athletic prowess & relentless mentality, if he does that, then Lacy will be finishing his Tigers career with an iconic campaign.
