For a second straight year, LSU sixth year senior running back John Emery Jr has torn his ACL during practice, The Advocate's Wilson Alexander reported. LSUOdyssey was able to confirm that sickening news, and share it here to you today with a shock, a stunned disgust and pure sadness.
Yet again, right as he begins to perform at a high, elite level for the Tigers, rattling off 78 total yards in little more than a quarter of action vs USC, rushing 10 times for 61 yards with 1 catch for 10 more, Emery Jr is down again for another entire season.
Any LSU fan knows how unlucky this young man is....and after repeatedly refusing the transfer portal to stick with the Tigers, Emery looked to finally have sealed his chance to be RB1....showcasing newfound power to go alongside his bursts of blurring pace....none of which seemed to dip after his ACL tear recovery from last fall....an injury suffered vs Florida only seconds after executing one of the sickest juke moves I've ever seen....
What a gut punch for John, after a long saga of a career at LSU: beginning the 2019 National Championship season as a freshman sensation (scoring 4 TDs that year, including 1 vs Oklahoma during the CFP Playoff Semifinal), before experiencing an injury and covid-ruined 2020 of disappointing production, followed by the NCAA harassment of suspensions that took away his 2021 season entirely, as well as the first two games of his 2022 campaign....then, you have John buried on the depth chart in 2023 and still starting to rise during these key games, tearing it up vs Florida before a harsh ACL tear.........after his recovery and near transfer to UCLA, Emery Jr surprised everyone (except LSUOdyssey) by sticking with the Tigers behind both Josh Williams and Kaleb Jackson.
But during the USC game, John outplayed both of those two combined, standing alone as LSU's only offensive threat throughout the entire second half....looking the best version of himself.
However, it appeared to us that Emery Jr was being overworked in camp and they were testing his ACL a bit much.
My inclinations were correct, as after the game, John should've received a day off to rest the ACL....instead, he went into an intensive practice and tore his ACL for the second time in 12 months.
One of the most electrifying potential Tigers in recent memory may have just played his final snaps at LSU....and if so, that is a tragic end to what was an exciting, all action LSU career that only scratched the surface of what was really possible.
