Only days after LSUOdyssey first reported he was entering the transfer portal, followed by the last 72 hours of speculation as to why his name didn't officially enter the portal after his announcement, red shirt junior Tiger DB Sage Ryan has now removed his name from transfer portal consideration and "will stay at LSU", the former 5 star recruit told LSUOdyssey.com in an exclusive: Sage continued to say, "I wanna play for my state & the brothers I've been sacrificing with since I got here..."
After a concerted effort from the Tiger staff to retain him began soon following our breaking story & his announcement, the focus became discussions alongside LSU staffers, led by Head Coach Brian Kelly, about Ryan's future entering his red shirt junior season this next fall.
Thanks to a love for his home state, teammates, his school, and wanting to stay close to family, Sage made a turnaround and will stay at LSU.
Over 3 seasons (2 full seasons on the field, fronted by 2 starts his red shirt freshman campaign), Ryan produced 64 tackles, 8 PBUs, 4.5 TFLs, 2 FF & 2 FR during his career at LSU, appearing across 1,060 snaps and 29 games (12 starts).
During his second season, Ryan forced 5 turnovers, and became just the 5th Tiger since 2000 to record 2 fumble recoveries from the same game.
In 2023, the former 3x LCA state champion started penetrating the backfield as a blitzer off the edge, producing 4.5 tackles for loss as he played more snaps than ever before, appearing in the 5th most defensive snaps (620) of any Tiger.
Ryan achieved an overall Pro Football Focus defensive grade of 70.0, alongside 73.3 in coverage, allowing 24 catches from 37 targets, while being the only Tiger starter at DB or LB who did not allow a passing touchdown in 2023.
